“Varening Konghay is an artist and an aspiring author, with a degree in English Literature. A product of different cities, she is at home with diversity of interests, people and skills. She desires to create a space for children to freely express themselves and nurture their imagination; and to help them understand the importance of mental wellness through her writing and art work.”

Where are you feeling empowered or disempowered in your woman’s story?

My family has always been supportive of my journey as an artist. However, being part of a society that views art as a hobby with little substantial value, I faced criticisms about my decisions. I was indecisive about art until I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder in 2017. After battling with it for over three years, I recognized the urgency of mental health awareness. And I felt art was the best way for me to express it.

“And I felt ART was the best way for me to express IT”

So, I finally decided to work on my first children’s picture book in 2020 to illustrate a healthy mindset amongst children through a relationship with God. Today, I stand motivated because of those little children who told me how this book has encouraged and inspired them.

What would you change about the assumptions of women made by Society?

The assumption that a woman’s only role in life is to be a mother or a wife needs to be changed. First of all, a woman should be able to decide if and when she wants to start a family. Secondly, a woman should have the opportunity to perform various roles and functions at different levels in society or organizations. Society should not limit someone’s potential on account of their gender.

What message or wisdom, expertise or ideas would you like to convey other women?

As a Christian, I believe that the highest honor of a woman is in revering God. Quoting

Proverbs 31:30, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”

About “The White Book

The White in ‘The White Book’ symbolizes peace and tranquility, the serenity that comes by being in the presence of God.

It is a story of a child on a journey called life, who walks with peace in her heart because she believes and can see through the eye of her faith, that God is always with her, and she is never alone.

The story draws  inspiration from Psalm 23. David’s song about finding perfect peace in the presence of God, which helps us be more confident in the face of uncertainty on Earth. This story hopes to bring peace in the reminder that like the child, we are all hitchhikers on the same journey, travelling to be united with God for eternity in Heaven.

“Grandpa forgot almost everything, but he never forgot about Christ. Every day he would instruct us to read the Bible and pray together. He was a man of God and he walked with God till the end.

My brief time with him inspired me to dedicate my first book to him. It saddened me that my book was released a few days after his demise. However, I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to be with him in his last days.” Source.
